Coal

Thermal electricity is generated from burning fossil fuels like coal.

Canada has an abundance of coal. In terms of hydrocarbon reserves, coal far exceeds the oil sands. 8.5% of Canada’s energy is produced by coal.1

Carbon capture and storage, used to capture emissions from coal burning power plants and store them underground, has the potential to dramatically reduce the carbon emissions released into the atmosphere.  This may be an important strategy for Canada, as roughly 13% of Canada’s GHG emissions come from coal-fired electricity.2
