Biomass is the second largest renewable energy source in Canada.1 The most common form of biomass energy is found in the pulp and paper and forest products industries through a cogeneration production process.
The wood harvested basically serves two purposes: 1) by being a feedstock for pulp and paper production; and 2) when the waste product (black liquor and solid-biomass residues) is recycled as an energy source to generate heat for drying kilns and to produce steam and electricity for running the plant and/or sale to the electricity grid.
The prospect for biomass fired electricity generation has increased as governments consider options for displacing some of the electricity produced from fossil fuels.2
